Instagram Etiquette Memo

Instagram officially has more users than Twitter.  Instead of tweeting, most of the world is now taking pictures of their dinner.  There aren't too many specific Instagram rules apart from posting offensive or nude photos.  Although you have the freedom to post (almost) anything you'd like, do yourself and your followers a favor by avoiding the following Instagram annoyances:

Not Choosing a Filter

Instagram is first and foremost a photo sharing app, however if you choose not to pick a filter, you are missing out on half the fun.

Posting Text Message Photos

Do your friends and family know their texts have been screencaped?  Yikes.

Spamming Followers With Too Many Pictures

Unlike Facebook, one cannot manage or filter their newsfeed.  If you are posting over eight photos each and every day, you may need an Instavention.  We want to miss you.  Do your best to enhance mystery every now and then.

Meme Overload

It's not that we don't like memes, but we want to see your original photos.  We want to know what's new with you.  If we wanted to see nothing but memes, we would begin a Tumblr account.

Posting Selfies in the Mirror

Selfies can make you feel confident on your best hair days.  However, taking "sexy" selfies in the bathroom mirror will make you look anything but sexy.  (Especially when you can see the reflection of your phone.)  Instagramers receive extra embarrassing narcissistic points for pursing their lips and creating the duck face.  Trust me, desperation doesn't look good on anyone.

Following Only Scantily Clad Women

For any men following (mostly) scantily clad women but not posting any pictures of your own....pray tell me, what are your intentions?

No Variety in Posts

We adore your photos of your babies and pets (really we do) but if these are the only posts you regularly share, it will drain your followers.  Unless your entire network shares your specific obsessions, chances are, your friends would like to see more variety.

Which Instagram annoyances irk you the most?

Music Discovery Mondays - First Edition

The clouds are gray, and a blizzard is expected to hit the Northeast.  I can't think of a better time to begin a new blog series than now.  Whether you are buried underneath projects at work, or buried at home due to weather woes, now is the time to discover your new favorite tunes.

As I have stated in previous blog posts, with so many exceptional new artists and media outlets, it is difficult to know which musical source to unearth.  Relax, I will do all the work and play the role as your musical curator.  Each month, I will provide you with either new or noteworthy tracks to help you navigate your musical journey.  So let's begin now, shall we?

1.  Duvan - Amason

Amason is a Sweedish indie powerhouse of sorts.  Gustauv Ejstes (Dunjan), Amanda Bergman (Idiot Wind) and Pontus Winnberg (from Miike Snow) all collaborate to produce such a cool and collected single and album.  Stream this polished album on NPR while it is still available.

 2.  Tropic of Cancer - Panda Bear

Noah Lennox of Animal Collective fame has returned with his fifth (!) solo album under the moniker Panda Bear.

Panda Bear fans can expect to hear the same neo-psychedelia atmospheric sounds as featured in this luscious track and his previous work.  (Whereas, within the remainder of the album, Noah Lennox cites mostly 1990s hip hop artists as influences.)

 3.  10,000 Emerald Pools - Borns

Sink into this wondrous gem from Michigan born/L.A. based artist Borns (Garret Borns).   Born's debut will float in your head day after day.  (For better, not worse.)

9 Alternatives to Watching the Superbowl

If you are one of the 111.5 million folks that plan on watching the Superbowl this year, good for you.  But if you are one of the millions of Americans who are indifferent to the teams competing, or the sport itself, consider yourself lucky.  There is a wondrous world out there that doesn't involve men tackling other men.  There are empty streets that need to be explored.  Books on your shelf that are waiting to be enjoyed and leafed through.  So make Sunday February 1st a date with other Superbowl avoiders or simply yourself by partaking in the following activities.

1.  Watch the Puppy Bowl!  After a good six minutes though, you will already have your furry fix, so  proceed to number 2.

2.  Take care of errands.  Does your your laptop need repair from techy wizards?  Hit up the Apple Store.  Can't find parking at Trader Joes?  Don't fret, you'll be able to locate a parking spot. The shortened waits most anywhere will lighten your mood and allow you to manage errands like a ninja.

3.  If you are stuck co-hosting a Superbowl party, redirect your priorities towards learning how to brew your own beer.

4.  Hit up that new, busy restaurant that is nearly impossible to get into without reservations.

5.  Or if you want to grab fast food to go, Chipotle may be line-less for once.

6.  Binge-watch a new TV show on Netflix.  If you'd like to discover some worthy flicks on Netflix Instant, refer to my post: The Best Movies On Netflix Instant You Aren't Watching.

7.  Read a book.  A number of former NFL players have massive brain damage due to concussions.  In fact, according to the New York Times, brain trauma is expected to affect one in three players.  Strengthen the dynamic noogin you already have by diving into a good book.

8.  Focus on your favorite aspects of the Superbowl: i.e. party snacks, commercials.  Go ahead and prepare your favorite party snacks whether for one or a group and Youtube this year's finest ads.

9.  Do whatever you damn well please!

Top 8 Predictions for 2015

The "changing times" are an ongoing theme of the 1910s/1920s period drama series "Downton Abby."  Our current "changing times" are so rapid that making wild predictions for each forthcoming year almost seems plausible.  Who is to say that my farcical 2015 predictions couldn't come true?  Truth is, after all, stranger than fiction.  Here are my 8 predictions for 2015:

1.  Taylor Swift will not only pay for her fan's student loans, but also our government's debt.

2.  The wealthiest 1% will own more than half of the world's wealth.....it will also own the manuscript for the new Harry Potter book that hasn't been released yet.

3.  New York urbanists will continue to pay $9 for a cup of bone broth at Brodo (a take-away window.)  Health conscious consumers will eventually pay $9 for a cup of Campbell's chicken noodle soup at the competing business venture located next door.

4.  In order to save their careers, American comedians will tweak their stand-up set and tweets to appear more politically correct.

5.  Now that Sam Smith is dating someone and is no longer consumed by unrequited love, former fans that once identified with Smith will dismiss him and will eagerly await for Adele's latest album.

6.  As a diary of a current prisoner at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba is published for the first time, Charles Manson will also decide to release a memoir of his own.  It will pinpoint serial killings, his songwriting craft and love at 80 years old.

7.  Hayo Miyazaki, mastermind of Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, will be forced out of retirement as soon as the Sponge Bob Movie is released in theaters.

8.  Taxpayers will not only have to address their health insurance status on their returns, but also their sexual orientation, citizen status and which team they are rooting for at the Superbowl.

What are some of your wildest predictions for 2015?

Why Christians Shouldn't Watch Fox News

I am a follower of Christ, however sometimes, I have a difficult time relating to the American Christian culture.  It is depressing when the teachings and attributes of Jesus are not being modeled in our nation because of our self-righteous obsession with politics.

Although I consider myself to be an Independent, I am not indifferent when it comes to political issues.  There may be a number of issues in which I may occasionally sway to the right on the political spectrum, yet I cannot justify supporting the corrupt "news" television station Fox News.

I realize other slanted news channels (i.e. MSNBC) are just as destructive, but statistically speaking, a higher percentage of older Christians are more-likely to become hypnotized by Fox News' brainwashing programs.  So here lies my analysis on the baby boomer news giant and what needs to be done.  It all begins with a Fox News fast.

What Fox News Does

1. Promotes Fear

Fox News promotes propaganda in order to generate fear.  Whether commentators are conjuring up the next Anti-Christ speculation or the Ebola outbreak, Fox News wants to provide you with controversial scare tactics.  As a Christian, you are called to be God-fearing; not world-fearing.   Although it is vital that you educate and prepare yourselves for the dangers of the world, you also shouldn't spend a great deal of time worrying.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

2.  Spews Hate

In addition to promoting fear, Fox News wants to generate ratings by spewing hate.  (And this model seems to work, since Fox News ranks as the #1 most watched cable news channel nearly each year.)

"I just wish Katrina had only hit the United Nations building, nothing else, just had flooded them out, and I wouldn't have rescued them." - Bill O'Reilly, 2005

Christians are called to love everyone.  Not just anyone who acts, or looks like you.  (Unfortunately, in order to score ratings, Fox News wants to set you at war against the world.)

3.  Favors Entertainment Value

For many commentators and/or guests, Fox News isn't about informing the public, its about entertaining viewers and drawing a fan base.

"I could give a flying crap about the political process.  We're an entertainment company."
- Glenn Beck

Alternatives to Watching Fox News

1.  Pray

Pray for your political leaders whether you choose to support them or not.

1 Timothy 2:1-3
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  This is good, and pleases God our Savior.

2.  Speak Up

We are blessed to live in a country where we have the freedom of speech.  It is important that every citizen has a voice.  Speak up for whatever it is you may believe, but do so in a graceful and loving manner.  Do not resort to calling others hurtful and offensive names.

3.  Read and Educate Yourself

Don't depend on TV commentators that are relying heavily on record-breaking viewership.  No matter what news medium you may prefer, you can always count on some sort of slant or bias.  Read dozens of reliable sources from every which side and then deduce logical conclusions for yourself.

4.  Volunteer

Instead of constantly pointing the finger towards others, be the change you want to see in your community.  It doesn't matter where you choose to volunteer as long as you find ways to put others in front of yourself.

The 4 Greatest Soul Covers of Rock n Roll Songs

Since the 20th century, there has been no shortage of rock n roll artists either covering R&B tracks or taking credit for them.  Come on now, you don't really think Elvis is responsible for "Hound Dog" do you?  Big Mama Thornton's original soulful howl will make you change the way you interpret and appreciate this classic anthem.

Below I have included a list of reimagined covers, but this time I have featured some of the best soul covers of rock n roll songs.

1.  Here Comes the Sun - Nina Simone (1971)
Original artist: The Beatles

I suppose of all the soul covers I have hand-selected, this track is the jazziest of the bunch.  Although both versions of "Here Comes the Sun" are reassuring and comforting, Simone's take manages to resonate a heavy dose of innocence and hope simultaneously.

2.  How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - Al Green (1972)
Original artist: The Bee Gees

To be perfectly honest, I had no idea until recently that Al Green had even covered this song.  I always felt Green's rendition had his DNA smothered all over it.  To my dismay, I was extremely disappointed with the original version by none other than The Bee Gee's .

Al Green's interpretation embodies more credibility.  I'm not sure whether it is the way he soulfully recollects his failed relationship or if it is the haunting string arrangements that accompany him.  Either way, I'm going to forget that The Bee Gee's original track even exists....I think it will help me sleep at night.

3.  I Can't Get No Satisfaction - Otis Redding (1965)
Original artist - Rolling Stones

I get it Otis, you can't get no satisfaction.  But gosh darn it, you sure are determined.  Whereas, when Mick Jagger convinces us that he wants satisfaction, he pressed his lips together and does the funky chicken dance.  (Enough said.)

4.  Sunshine Of Your Love - Spanky Wilson (1970)
Original artist - Cream

Spanky's rendition of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" is the ultimate dance floor favorite at most any local pub's soul night.  If this little ditty doesn't get you groovin' in your seat, I'm not sure what will.

Top 10 Concerts Attended in the Last 10 Years

This post serves more of a purpose to me than most readers stumbling upon this page.  I wanted to chronicle the greatest concerts I have been to in the last decade.  (Especially since everyone seems to ask me.)  So, without further ado, here are the top 10 concerts I have attended within the last decade:

1.  Paul McCartney - Hollywood Bowl (2010)

5 Bands You Should See at Coachella Other Than the Headliners

As many of you music junkies may already know, the Coachella lineup had been announced earlier this week.  Whether or not you are delighted or outraged by the lineup, if you are willing to expand your musical horizons, you may find that there are plenty of artists with less exposure than AC DC that are worth your time.

Originally when I saw the 2015 lineup, I instantly wanted to promote St. Vincent, Father John Misty, and Belle and Sebastian as live acts that shouldn't be missed.  However, today I am going to pinpoint which bands whose names appear microscopic on the Coachella poster deserve your lent ears.

1.  Philip Selway

Who knew the drummer of Radiohead was such a tunesmith?  Selway has already quietly released two beautiful albums that are impressive enough to stand alone, regardless of his admirable musical resume.

2.  The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger or "GOASTT" is an arty/psych rock side project for Sean Lennon and his model girl-friend Charlotte Kemp Muhl.  Although Sean has won the musical genetic lottery, he will remain cursed for his music will always be compared to both John Lennon and the Beatles.  Which is almost unfair.  No one should ever have to be compared to the Beatles; genetic or not.  Regardless, give this band a chance....especially at Coachella where you may be tempted to place daisies in your hair.

3.  St. Paul and the Broken Bones

For lovers of blue-eyed soul, you won't want to miss St. Paul and the Broken Bones.  ::::That voice:::: I could continue to harp on about his lovely voice, or you could just watch this video instead.

4.  The Gaslamp Killer Experience

For a stimulating and mind-blowing DJ experience, Gaslamp Killer is your man.  As the co-founder of the L.A. night club Low End Theory, Gaslamp knows how to spin and how to deliver an impeccable vibe.

5.  Angel Olsen

Angel Olsen was one of 2014's greatest breakthrough artists.  Witness her live as she wails in such an enchanting manner.

What Apps We Still Need

Last week, The New York Times "Style" section featured an article titled What Isn't There An App For?  The contributor Henry Alford, whom is "afraid of the machine" sampled and reviewed convenient apps ranging from exercise to shopping and household apps.  The article didn't resonate with me so much as the headline.

We have an app for nearly everything and it is evident that technology has made our lives rather expedient.  Strange that with all of these advances in technology that we don't have apps for the following:

  • App to stop violence
  • App to mend broken hearts
  • App to terminate greed
  • App to prevent narcissism

I realize that as a human race, we can be rather selfish because of our human nature.  We all possess our shortcomings as earthly beings, but that doesn't make it permissible for us to stop trying to connect and love.  We have the capacity for love, though it is something we have to work on continuously.  I am glad we are constantly making progressive strides in technology, however we should also learn how to put the same emphasis and energy on our relationships.

How To Keep Your New Year's Resolutions

It's that time again.  You've been creating New Year's Resolutions.  You've declared that you are going to hit the gym and eat right this year.  Or perhaps you are finally going to take the GRE, change your career path or look for love.  Instead of moving forward each year insisting that "this year is going to be better," why don't you reflect on the past and consider what resolutions you have succeeded in and why.

How many times in the past did you actually complete a resolution?  What was it?  Was it realistic or measurable?  Did it improve your quality of life or make you a better person?

Perhaps you needed an incentive for sticking to your plan.  For example, if you were diagnosed with diabetes in the past year, you now possess a very strong reason to follow dietary restrictions.  If you are truly serious about developing healthy habits, you may need to "rewire your brain."

According to Psychology Today:

"Making resolutions work involves changing behaviors-and in order to change a behavior, you have to change your thinking (or "rewire" your brain.)  Brain scientists such as Antonio Damasio, Joseph LeDoux, and psychotherapist Stephen Hayes have discovered, through the use of MRIs, that habitual behavior is created by thinking patterns that create neural pathways and memories, which become the default basis for your behavior when you're faced with a choice or decision.  Trying to change that default thinking by "not trying to do it," in effect just strengthens it.  Change requires creating new neural pathways from new thinking."
- Why People Can't Keep New Year's Resolutions by Ray Williams

Last year, one of my many New Year's Resolutions was to start a blog.  I realize that this goal makes me sound like a simpleton.  By blogging, I'm not necessarily fighting habits or addictions that are extremely destructive.  I'm not entirely sure if I've had to "rewire my brain."  And who is to say that blogging will necessarily make me a better person.

Developing a blog in and of itself is an effortless task, until you decide how ambitious you are.  I don't expect to ever make money from my blog, however, I did have the intention of treating this blog as a passion project.

I wanted to make sure my resolution was measurable, therefore I decided that I would post 1-3 times a week unless I was on vacation or there was a zombie apocalypse of sorts.  So far I have succeed in accomplishing this relatively small goal.

I chose to blog primarily for myself. It is such a creative release to jot down the thoughts that constantly pollute my head.  And of course, I selfishly hope my readers can find some value in a number of my posts.

Throughout the last few months, I have learned that sometimes smaller tasks (i.e. amateur blogs) can provide you with the confidence to tackle larger projects in your life.  Making room for smaller hobbies or objections has allowed me to obtain a realistic outlook on my schedule.  More importantly, it has brought me more personal fulfillment because I am not taking on more than what I can handle.

What is your passion project?  What are smaller tasks that have led you towards success or fulfillment in the past year?  Until you decide upon a slew of New Year Resolutions for 2015, look back at how you have succeeded with your aspirations in the past year.  Give yourself a pat on the back, and then take notes.
