I don't need scientists to prove that top 40 pop songs are dumbing us down. Fortunately a world exists where talented and groundbreaking artists are perfecting their craft....and guess what? We currently live in that milieu.
Since most anyone can record and distribute music these days, it will take a little effort on your end to stumble upon these beloved virtuosos. But you know what? It's worth it to get outside your musical comfort zone. Let's stop supporting disposable performers and instead, embrace meriting taste and talent. Here are a few resources to help you do so:
Public and/or College Radio
Instead of listening to the same tired and uninspired songs on your local top 40 radio stations, public and college radio stations provide a more flexible and eclectic format that may very well introduce you to a wide scope of artists and genres. No, not all public radio stations play solely classical music. Dozens of public radio station directors function as cutting edge taste-makers. In fact, a number of public radio station DJs are also music supervisors, curating epic tracks for your favorite film soundtracks.

Sirius Radio is like the HBO version of radioland: you'll need to pay for a monthly subscription. Fortunately, if you should decide to subscribe, you'll have over 175 channels to choose from. Go ahead and listen to a Sirius radio station you wouldn't normally give the light of day.

Record stores are a dying breed today. If you should happen to live close to one of these archaic sites, drop by and ask the music savvy owner or clerk for some recommendations. Trust me, they will be more than happy to turn you on to the latest greatest albums.
Concert Festivals
You don't have to set aside $400 to hit up Coachella to discover the latest acts. Fortunately, there are a myriad of nationwide festivals, many of which may even comply with your budget. The New York Times recently published the top 50 Essential Summer Festivals. Be sure to bookmark that site and locate a concert festival in your neck of the woods.
Cutting Edge Music Magazines or Blogs
Music magazines and blogs provide you with a sort of digital backstage pass that enables you to learn more about new artists and their work though the latest interviews, reviews and occasionally even live album streams.
